Brandyn Thompson of Boise State with an interception at Oregon in 2008

College football season is here and teams from coast to coast who have prepared all summer are finally getting ready to start their seasons off.  Powerful teams like Florida, USC, Oklahoma and Texas are all preparing to make their runs in the BCS.  Different teams who are expected to finish in the top 3 or 4 of their power BCS conferences are all ready to make their runs at a possible chance to make it to a BCS game.  BCS bowl games bring in millions of dollars to the various schools who are fortunate enough to participate in them.  Some teams in these conferences start off mediocre and turn it on late to make it to their conference championship games and battle for their opportunity to play in the BCS.  Boise State, who opens up tonight against Pac 10 Conference team Oregon at home on the blue turf, has had a shot over the past decade or so at getting to the BCS as well.  Boise won the Fiesta Bowl several years ago against Adrian Peterson and the powerful Oklahoma Sooners. Utah last year had the opportunity to go to the Sugar Bowl, and beat all mighty Alabama in a thrilling game.

Stories like this are few and far between and a lot of fun.  Both Boise and Utah, in order to get to a BCS game had to go undefeated in their regular season.  Oklahoma and Florida who played in the BCS title game last year each had one loss.  You might say, “Well obviously, the Big 12, SEC and other power conferences are so much better than the WAC and Mountain West.” That is a fair statement, because top to bottom in a normal year the power conferences are better.  That argument doesn’t really apply in 2009 with the Big East football conference.  The Big East favorites include, Cincinnati, Rutgers, and West Virginia.  Some of the teams at the bottom of the division include Louisville and Syracuse (who is starting a 4 year starting pg at Duke at QB this season).  One of those teams, however will have the opportunity to represent their conference in a BCS Bowl.  It is time for the BCS and NCAA to just come out and say what is going on here.  Money is the key in all sports, whether its college, international, high school, or professional.  These conferences all have an agreement with the NCAA and BCS that their power conferences will all have over a million dollars of revenue from the BCS games alone so that they can remain strong.  They don’t want to take the chance and give Boise, BYU and TCU the opportunity automatically.  Not only are the conferences of each of these teams pretty strong but they are going above and beyond teams from other conferences by challenging other powerful teams from these power conferences.  Boise State plays Oregon tonight, BYU plays Oklahoma and Florida State, and TCU plays at Virginia and at Clemson.  Each of these teams understand that in order for them to make it to the BCS bowls they must go undefeated.  I don’t know if that’s necessarily fair or not.  As we all know, the college football season is the most exciting in sports, with upsets occurring nearly every week and the “can they go undefeated?” question coming up throughout the months of October and November.  I hope all of the athletes can stay healthy and enjoy their seasons and do well.  I have much love and respect for all of these athletes, but I hope the committees begin to look at the possibility of including the best team from the Mountain West or WAC in the BCS.  It is unlikely, and I understand why this hasn’t happened yet, but I am just throwing it out their for you guys to think about.  Make sure you keep an eye on Boise State, TCU and BYU throughout the season to “upset” teams and make their runs towards undefeated seasons.
